Principal's report 2/09/21

Welcome to 2022 Foundation students and families!

A warm welcome to our 2022 Foundation students who have now commenced their transition with our FPS Foundation team. FPS has an extensive transition and induction program that we have started earlier than other years to accommodate for children that have a different experience of starting school due to lock downs. We now meet the majority of our new students and families through Webex! Great effort to our NEW Foundation students on your first transition session and well done to our Foundation teachers who have again, creatively adapted their teaching and expertise. In 2022 FPS will have  3x Foundation classes and there are limited spaces for more students.  If you know of a family with a child who has not enrolled yet, please encourage them to enrol ASAP!

Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students for their outstanding NAPLAN results. Our results are higher than state in all areas assessed- writing, reading, numeracy, spelling and grammar and punctuation ( G&P at level for Year 3). Families will be notified when we receive their child’s report.

Be Your Bestival - Film

Sessions for students to participate in this are being held by Briony every  week on Webex. Sessions are advertised in our weekly calendar and in Dojo events. Briony also has a Dojo class where films, photos, writing and all creations can be uploaded. We look forward to sharing our Bestival film with our FPS community next term.

Parent -Teacher Conferences

Parents and carers had an opportunity this Wednesday to meet on Webex with their child’s teacher. I hope that all families took up the opportunity to discuss their child’s learning from both a remote learning and onsite lens. It was disappointing that we had to drop our students' participation in this year’s conferences due to inadequate time onsite to properly prepare our students. We hope that our usual structure will return next year! Teachers are always available to discuss your child and their learning needs if a parent/carer has any concerns. Please contact your child’s teacher to organise a mutually convenient time if you require.

Not returning to FPS in 2022?

Please let us know if you are not returning to FPS in 2022. Planning for next year has commenced and we need this information ASAP. This does not include year 6 students who are leaving at the end of the year.

Welcome to our Teacher Candidates

This week we welcomed Tessa, Steph and Grace to our Foundation Team as teacher candidates from Melbourne Graduate School of Education-MGSE. We applaud their decision to join education as a career path and know that they will have many wonderful opportunities to make a difference in childrens’ lives. A current career in education sees educators who have the expertise, creativity and skillset to pivot between onsite-face to face teaching and remote learning. Read on to find out more about our teacher candidates.

Steph Herbert
I have always really enjoyed the process of learning and want to help students develop a  love of learning. Since I was a kid I always wanted to be a teacher but it wasn’t until after uni that I realised primary teaching is where my passion lay. I completed a BA at The University of Melbourne, majoring in Sociology and English & Theatre Studies. During 2020, I completed a Cert IV in TESOL and taught weekend classes for adult ESL learners. I also work part-time at a little cafe. During lockdown, I’ve spent most of my time in the kitchen and have eaten my weight in baked goods! I’m really excited to work with the foundation team. I’m so grateful to be here (especially during such a crazy time) and can’t wait to soak in everything FPS has to offer!

I had a wonderful first day and already feel like a part of the FPS team.

Tessa Pascale Ellwood
Hello Flemington Primary School! My name is Tessa, but you can call me Tess :) I am so excited to be starting my teacher placement at your school. I chose to be a teacher because I love to learn and teach with kids. I love to be curious and play and I think being a teacher is a lovely way to give back to the community and teach us all to be better citizens of the world. I love that I will always be learning and meeting new people and find more hope in our world. I studied an undergraduate degree in geography and history at university before my teaching degree. I love the ancient world and am passionate about the environment and climate. I am also a yoga teacher and teach occasionally on weekends, and at school!

Lockdown can be hard, but I have enjoyed the extra time to take good care of myself and spend time with the people I live with. I am looking forward to getting to know the students and teachers at FPS and hopefully get to spend time in person at the school too.

Grace - Introduction to follow

Fathers’ Day

Wishing all our Fathers, male carers, uncles, grand fathers and other male companions who make up our FPS community a wonderful day on Sunday. We hope that you have some time to reflect on the wonderful and important job that you do. We are celebrating this year with a special virtual Fathers’ Day assembly. Students are encouraged to bring along their dad or carer and join in our “dance off” that will be led by Briony our Creative Artist in Residence.
