Miss Gabrielle Nilsson

Sport is taught by a Specialist Teacher, Gabrielle Nilsson. Gabrielle has Physical Education qualifications in addition to her Teaching qualifications and has also particioated in a number of extension and refresher courses for Physical Education and Sport. She recently attended the ACHPER training program and attends the ACHPER Conference each tyear.
She is also a regular participant in both Somers Camp and the Lord Mayors Camp at Portsea with students from FPS.
The program at FPS is also supported by visiting specialists/coaches, Student Teachers and in school clinics. All students participate in at least one hour of sport each week. The Physical Education program is sequential and developmental with a range of specific skills relating to movement, ball handling, hand-eye coordination, cooperation and participation, and sport/game rules and tactics. In addition the vocabulary and health aspects vary each term.
All students have the opportunity to participate in the Swimming Program, held over ten weeks. Each grade level participates during a specific term. This program is conducted at the Travancore Swimming pool, just a short walk from school.
Students in Grades 3-6 also compete at District and Zone athletics, swimming and interschool sporting events.
Students in Prep participate in the Perceptual Motor Program to develop gross and fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, left-right concepts and awareness, body-spatial awareness, following instructions, organisation, cooperation and confidence. Some of the activities include crawling under and through confined spaces; hopping and skipping, snow angels for left-right coordination, throwing and catching beanbags, balls and discs; throwing at targets; walking across hoops, rings, ladders; and packing up.
This program aids reading, writing, concentration; the necessary fine and gross motor skills for movement, sport and using tools; confidence, cooperation and the ability to follow instructions as well as fun!
Students in Grades 3-6 also participate in district athletics, cross country and swimming carnivals.
Students in Grades 5 & 6 participate in an Inter School Sports Competition over the year in both Summer and Wnter sports, Zone Swimming Carnival and District & Zone Athletics Sportts as well as the Cross Country.
An Athletics Carnival is held at school to identify students for the Interschool athletics events. At the end of the year, a Twilight Sports event is held. Both these events use the school House Sports system based on historical people and places.
Cashmere, Delhi, Mooltan and Mangalore are the houses. School House Colours.
| Prep In the Prep year, students are encouraged to participate, cooperate and learn the necessary fine and gross motor skills. These include hand-eye coordination, balance, movement, throwing and catching, kicking, hopping and skipping. |
Year 1/2 In years 1 and 2, students are encouraged to develop basic skills and begin to play games involving multiple skills. They refine and practise their skills. They are introduced to activities such as gymnastics, hockey and bat tennis. |
Year 3/4 In years 3 and 4, students are encouraged to use their skills and be involved in games requiring cooperation, teamwork. They also take part in dance, athletics and begin to learn the rules of team sports. They are introduced to the simpler versions of the sports they will play in grade 5/6. |
Year 5/6 In years 5 and 6, students are assisted to develop extended skills and participate in the Interschool sport program. They are introduced to a range of sports and activities such as hockey, lacrosse, volleyball, tennis as well as the mainstream sports. |
